Progressive web app, explained for decision-makers
Think of a progressive web app as your web address with app behaviour added: an icon on the phone, screens that load without a connection, and notifications the user agreed to receive. Nothing is downloaded from a store, and every fix reaches users the moment it ships.
That makes it a strong fit for tools reached through an SMS link, an email or a QR poster, and a weaker fit for apps that people open several times a day.
When a PWA app beats a native build in Singapore
Here is how the decision tends to land for three kinds of Singapore organisation:
| Organisation | Where a PWA fits | Where we would build native instead |
|---|---|---|
| Dental and medical groups | Slot booking, pre-visit forms and reminders opened from WhatsApp or a clinic QR code | Clinician tools that need the camera, offline records or device pairing all day |
| Private education providers | Course applications, open-house sign-ups and a light student portal | A daily campus app with timetables, payments and door access |
| Developers and large brands | Showflat appointments, digital brochures, member cards and campaign microsites | A long-life owner or member app that must sit in both stores |
If both app stores are a requirement, our mobile app team in Singapore builds native and cross-platform apps instead. Sector context for clinics is on our healthcare marketing in Singapore page.
Booking, loyalty and reminders that survive a weak signal
Groups usually ask a PWA for four behaviours:
- Cached screens. Opening hours, a member QR card or a brochure stay visible in a basement carpark or lift lobby, and a form filled in offline is sent when the phone reconnects.
- Opt-in alerts. Appointment reminders, points balances and launch-day notices. iPhones receive them only once the PWA has been added to the Home Screen, on iOS 16.4 or newer.
- Consent on record. Each opt-in is logged with its time and purpose, so your team can show consent under the PDPA.
- A single history. Bookings and points flow into your CRM and WhatsApp automation, so the front desk sees one customer.
Cost drivers, delivery and upkeep
Every PWA is estimated after scoping, and we publish no rate card. The estimate rises or falls with:
- How many user types sign in, from patients or students to staff and administrators.
- Which systems it connects to: clinic or student management software, CRM, payments, WhatsApp.
- How much must work offline, and how conflicting edits are resolved on sync.
- Notification rules, segments and who approves each message.
- Accessibility checks, the number of languages and the length of support.
Delivery has four stages: discovery with the staff and customers who will use it, screen design, a build wired into your current systems, and testing on real handsets. After launch we take care of browser and OS changes and security patches; bigger back ends sit with our custom software team.
For i.Dental, a Singapore dental group, a faster booking site cut mobile page load from 4.2 to 1.1 seconds and a two-step appointment form replaced the old flow, as the i.Dental case study explains.
