ChatGPT ads in Australia since April 2026
Australia was among OpenAI's first ad markets outside the US. A pilot was announced on 26 March 2026 and ads began rolling out to Free and Go users here on 16 April 2026. OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page (opens in a new tab), read 7 November 2026, shows the format is now available to advertisers in Australia.
- A labelled sponsored unit shows beneath a ChatGPT response, separated from the answer.
- Each unit carries a single image or, since the multi-image beta opened on 26 October 2026, several square images.
- Paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu) stay ad-free, as do under-18 accounts and Temporary Chats.
- Conversations touching personal health, mental health or politics carry no ads.
Buying ChatGPT paid ads: routes, objectives, auction
OpenAI sells through its Ads Solutions team, through agency and technology partners, and in self-serve Ads Manager, still marked as beta. Every campaign picks one objective:
- Views, charged per thousand impressions.
- Clicks, charged per click.
- Conversions, charged per valid click or optimised impression, never per conversion.
An auction decides which eligible ad appears and what the winner pays. Fresh self-serve accounts can be held to their home country until identity checks and a spend threshold are met.
Which Australian brands and institutions it suits
OpenAI's ad policy, read 7 November 2026, starts with four areas: everyday consumer goods; services from local businesses; travel and entertainment; and education and digital products. In Australia that suits national brands, retail and ecommerce groups, universities and training providers, and software companies.
Outside the US, OpenAI generally prohibits ads for financial or health services and prohibits legal services ads, so banks, super funds, insurers, health groups and law firms are better served through GEO for AI answers. Gambling, alcohol, tobacco and housing sale listings are off limits too.
What our ChatGPT ads management covers
We treat ChatGPT as one channel inside the media plan rather than a side test:
- Fit check. Offer, claims and landing pages reviewed against OpenAI's ad policy and the local rules it expects advertisers to follow.
- Build. An Ads Manager account held by your business, OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API events, URL macros, and pages that let OpenAI's crawlers in.
- Creative. Titles, copy, images and context hints, tested by audience and offer.
- Measurement. Last-touch conversions counted over a click window of 7, 14 or 30 days, compared with Google Ads in Australia and Meta.
On the organic side, our search work for Nomad Coffee Group took organic visits across Australia and New Zealand from 18,400 to 70,800 a month between January and August 2026, as the Nomad Coffee case study shows.
